T-Mobile Coverage Quick Stats

Here are fast facts about T-Mobile coverage:

  • Total coverage: 46.6%
  • Total square miles covered: 1,551,924
  • Total population covered: 330 million people (99.0%)
  • 5G coverage: 36.0%
  • 5G square miles covered: 1,200,851

The above statistics come from our analysis of the FCC signal strength data as well as from T-Mobile directly.

T-Mobile Coverage

T-Mobile is a major cell phone carrier in the U.S.

It is known as a mobile network operator, or MNO, which means it builds and operates its own network.

T-Mobile puts up towers, installs equipment, purchases spectrum licenses from the FCC, and develops its own LTE and 5G network cores to manage the back-end of the network.

T-Mobile operates three main cellular networks:

  1. T-Mobile 4G LTE
  2. T-Mobile Extended Range 5G
  3. T-Mobile Ultra Capacity 5G

T-Mobile 4G LTE

T-Mobile's 4G LTE network is the largest. It covers over 99% of the U.S. population. Speeds on 4G LTE are generally pretty good, however they are not as fast as on 5G.

T-Mobile Extended Range 5G

T-Mobile Extended Range 5G is T-Mobile's low-band 5G network. It includes 5G frequencies that can travel farther, giving it an exceptional coverage area.

T-Mobile says over 325 million Americans, or 97.9% of the U.S. population, are covered by its Extended Range 5G network. Data speeds on Extended Range 5G are similar to speeds on 4G LTE.

T-Mobile Ultra Capacity 5G

The Ultra Capacity 5G network is T-Mobile's fast 5G network.

It uses mid-band and mmWave 5G frequencies to deliver speeds up to 3.3 Gbps.

However, Ultra Capacity 5G has less range than Extended Range 5G. It only covers 275 million people, or around 82.9% of the U.S. population. You can tell you are connected to Ultra Capacity 5G when you see a "UC" icon in your phone's status bar.

T-Mobile's 5G network, made up of Extended Range 5G and Ultra Capacity 5G, delivers some of the fastest data speeds across the country.

Our crowd-sourced speed test map shows T-Mobile has median download speeds of 152.34 Mbps. That is over 2.4x faster than the median download speeds on AT&T (61.17 Mbps) and Verizon (61.23 Mbps).

T-Mobile has the second most 5G coverage in the United States.

Its 5G network covers 36% of the U.S. and over 325 million Americans.

About 275 million of Americans people are covered by T-Mobile Ultra Capacity 5G, which delivers fast speeds up to 3.3 Gbps.

T-Mobile has been rapidly expanding and building out its 5G network since its acquisition of Sprint in 2020. Many new and existing customers are noticing seeing dramatic improvements in T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile has less coverage than AT&T.

While T-Mobile covers 46.6% of the U.S., AT&T covers a mighty 78.1%.

AT&T has the largest coverage area of all the carriers in the U.S. right now.

Both carriers have large 5G footprints.

T-Mobile 5G covers 36.0% of the U.S. while AT&T’s 5G network covers 43.3%.

More importantly, T-Mobile's network is faster than AT&T's.

We measure speeds across the country through our crowd-sourced speed test map.

T-Mobile's median download speeds are 152.34 Mbps, which is roughly 2.4x faster than AT&T's median download speeds of 61.17 Mbps.

Median upload speeds on T-Mobile are 17.34 Mbps, which is also faster than the 11.29 Mbps median upload speeds on AT&T.

Both T-Mobile and AT&T will likely perform well in cities, as both networks cover over 99% of the U.S. population.

However, in more rural areas AT&T may be a better option because it has a larger overall coverage footprint.

Check AT&T coverage and data speeds in your area using our AT&T coverage map.

T-Mobile vs. Verizon Coverage

T-Mobile has less coverage than Verizon does.

T-Mobile covers 46.6% of the United States. Verizon, meanwhile, covers 67.4% of the United States.
